Railways, population and territorial inequality in Portugal, 1801-1930

Luís Espinha da Silveira, Daniel Alves, Nuno Miguel Lima, Ana Alcântara e Josep Puig-Farré
Historiography on railways in Portugal has mainly analysed their impact on the country as a whole and has paid little attention to their influence on population dynamics. This article argues that railways stimulated population growth in the areas served by this infrastructure that they contributed to urban development and encouraged internal migration. Their effects, however, were not the same in all parts of the country: railways benefited the already prosperous regions (Atlantic North) and had a negative influence in areas with greater structural weaknesses (Inland North). Beyond that it was unable to attract a significant migrant population.

Time and Price of Transport: The use of the railway network in the late nineteenth century

Magda Pinheiro, Nuno Miguel Lima e Joana Paulino
In the nineteenth century with the construction of channels and the introduction of rail-ways, the relationship between space and transport costs was changing. This evolution, according to the liberal assumptions, should be at the origin of equal market access conditions. To understand the contribution of railways to the construction of the domestic market, in late nineteenth century Portugal, we have a survey resulting from the answers of the Municipalities. Treatment of this survey is done in this article using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) witch allows us to present the problem under a different light.

Spanish visions of some banned in Portugal of Braganza (1668-1700): about a new Iberian Union

David Martín Marcos
The Treaty of Madrid in 1668 sanctioned the recognition of the independence of Portugal, after nearly three decades of fighting between Spain and Portugal. Gradually the links between both sides of the border became diluted, but not the lifting of some voices against this process. This article discusses some of these movements opposed to the separation of the peninsular kingdoms. It stresses Peter II decision to form a Hispanic monarchy with a Portuguese sign, taking advantage of the dynastic crisis of Charles II, to demonstrate that the idea of an Iberian Union had not completely disappeared in the late seventeenth century.

To think and to encourage science. The creation of the Junta Nacional de Educação and the scientific organization policy under the Estado Novo

Maria Fernanda Rollo, Maria Inês Queiroz e Tiago Brandão
In the early twentieth century, in a context of growing recognition and appreciation of science, was born the idea of creating an independent agency designed to promote and organize scientific funding in Portugal. The Junta Nacional de Educação (JEN), created in 1929, was the first Portuguese institution whose mission was to promote and support science development and organization. This article traces the genesis of JEN, analyzing the principles and assumptions that were at its origin. It contextualizes and describes the activity of the JEN in the relations between science and Estado Novo.

The post-modern historiography

José D'Assunção Barros
This article aims to discuss the concept of Post-Modernity in its applicability related to Historiography, beyond to present a panoramic view involving the various positions of the historians in relation to the historiographical postmodernism. What are the main features of the post-modern historiography, and which historians can be proposed as examples of this category? What is the context of emergence and maintenance of this discussion in recent decades? The article aims to bring this questions accompanied by the references that had already become classics for the theme.
